Jon Rahm wins the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions

Jon Rahm earned his eighth career PGA TOUR victory at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions to mark his seventh consecutive season with a win on TOUR. The Spaniard became the first player to follow a runner-up finish with a victory the following season at The Plantation Course at Kapalua since Vijay Singh in 2007. Rahm entered the day seven strokes back and equaled the largest come-from-behind victory at the Sentry Tournament of Champions (Gary Player/1978). With the win, Rahm qualified for a return trip to Maui in January 2024.

In August, the PGA TOUR and Sentry Insurance, which has served as title sponsor of the Sentry Tournament of Champions since 2018, announced a sponsorship extension through 2035. The new term further extended a 10-year partnership announced in January of 2020.

The Sentry Tournament of Champions was held at The Plantation Course at Kapalua from Jan. 4-8 2023 with an increased purse of $15 million, up from $8.2 million in 2022. Additionally, the event will lead off 2024 when the TOUR transitions to a calendar-year season.

Beginning with the 2023 event, the Sentry Tournament of Champions field, which includes all winners from official PGA TOUR events in the preceding calendar year, will also include the top 30 players from the FedExCup Playoffs Points list who qualify for the TOUR Championship in recognition of the outstanding performance required throughout the FedExCup Season to advance to East Lake. The Sentry Tournament of Champions is now an elevated event on the TOUR schedule and joins a select list of events that the top 30 players who qualify for the TOUR Championship earn exemptions into including the Masters Tournament, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, Genesis Scottish Open, and The Open Championship.

The Sentry Tournament of Champions was informed in early August that the PGA TOUR Policy Board has approved a new tournament eligibility category to include the men’s Olympic gold medalist in the year following his win, provided he is a full member of the TOUR at the time of his gold medal performance.

The approved category will qualify 2020 Tokyo gold medalist Xander Schauffele for the 2022 Sentry Tournament of Champions, which returns to The Plantation Course at Kapalua, January 5-9.

Xander is the 2019 Sentry Tournament of Champions.  In addition to Schauffele, 30 players have currently qualified for the Sentry Tournament of Champions courtesy of their PGA TOUR victories in the 2021 calendar year, including seven of the top 10 in the FedExCup standings – Collin Morikawa, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Jon Rahm, Harris English, Bryson DeChambeau, Justin Thomas and Schauffele.
